I just bought a new home, how should I set up Utilities?

To set up utilities in Toronto, contact Toronto Hydro for electricity, Enbridge Gas for gas (if applicable), and the City of Toronto (311) for water/sewer, ideally a few weeks before your move-in date, providing your new address and move-in date to start new accounts online or by phone, ensuring you confirm services are active for your closing day.

1. Electricity (Hydro):

  • Provider: Toronto Hydro.
  • Action: Visit their website to start a new account or transfer service if moving within Toronto. You'll need your new address and move-in date.
  • Contact: Call 416-542-8000 if you prefer.

2. Natural Gas (If Applicable):

  • Provider: Enbridge Gas.
  • Action: Set up a new account on their website, entering your new address and move-in date. Expect a one-time setup charge on your first bill.

3. Water & Sewer:

  • Provider: City of Toronto.
  • Action: Contact the city via the 311 phone line (or 416-392-2489 from outside city limits). Your lawyer usually notifies the city as the new owner to switch the account, but confirming with 311 ensures it's set up for you.

4. Other Services (Internet, Cable, etc.):

  • Action: Contact your preferred providers (like Bell, Rogers) separately to set up new service at your new address and cancel at your old one.

Key Tips for a Smooth Transition:

  • Do it Early: Contact providers a couple of weeks before closing to schedule activation for your move-in day.
  • Have Info Ready: Your new address, move-in date, and possibly a deposit.
  • Confirm: Ensure services are on before you fully move in.
  • Final Bills: Request final reads for your old place to close those accounts.
